Adenophyllum porophylloides – “San Felipe Dogweed”
Also Known As: San Felipe Dyssodia
Other Botanical Names: Dyssodia porophylloides
Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)
Bloom Period: Mar-Jun
Form: Perennial herb
Habitat: Washes, alluvial fans, rocky slopes, in open scrub, woodland
Leaves: Pinnately lobed, pointy tips, “claw-like”; opposite
Translation: “Adenophyllum” is Greek for “gland leaf”; “porophylloides” means “with leaves like those of [the genus] Porophyllum,” which is Greek for “pore leaf”; “Dyssodia” is Greek for an “unpleasant smell.”
Notes: Strongly aromatic plant; some find it unpleasant, but personally I find it enchanting and would bottle it if I could. I fell in love with this plant the first time I saw it, growing beside the trail to Forty-Nine Palms Oasis in Joshua Tree National Park.
