Chaenactis carphoclinia -“Pebble Pincushion”
Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)
Bloom Period: Mar-Apr
Form: Annual herb
Habitat: Rocky or gravelly soil
Leaves: Pinnately compound, leaflets linear, tips curved; basal and alternate
Translation: “Chaenactis” is Greek for “gaping ray” and refers to the outer ring of flowers, which are enlarged; “carphoclinia” is from Greek, “karphos” is “a small dry object, splinter, twig” and “kline” is “bed” but what this refers to is unclear.
Notes: Often mixed up with Stevia Pincushion (Chaenactis stevioides).
