Camissonia pubens - "Hairy Suncup"

Camissonia pubens – “Hairy Suncup”

Family: Evening Primrose (Onagraceae)
Bloom Period: May-Jun
Form: Annual herb
Habitat: Sandy soils
Leaves: Lanceolate, wavy; alternate
Translation: “Camissonia” is named for Ludolf Karl Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), French-born Prussian botanist, author, Romantic poet, and custodian of the botanical gardens in Berlin; “pubens” is Latin for “hairy,” which describes the leaves.
Notes: I found this plant somewhat out of its reported range, which is further north, in the valley east of the Sierra Nevada. Its roadside location on the 62 in Joshua Tree suggests that seeds hitchhiked with a traveler who came down on the 395.
