Lilac Sunbonnet (Langloisia setosissima var. punctata)

Langloisia setosissima var. punctata – “Lilac Sunbonnet”

Also Known As: Bristly Langloisia, Great Basin Langloisia
Family: Phlox (Polemoniaceae)
Bloom Period: Mar-Jun
Form: Annual
Habitat: Washes, flats, slopes, gravelly to sandy soils
Leaves: Oblanceolate, pinnately lobed; mostly basal
Translation: “Langloisia” named after French-born Auguste Barthélémy Langlois (1832-1900), a Louisiana priest and botanist; “setosissima” is Latin for “very bristly”; “punctata” is Latin for “spotted,” a feature that distinguishes this subspecies from the other.
Notes: This is the only species in this genus. This subspecies, punctata, has yellow markings. The other subspecies, setosissima, lacks the yellow, and the dots form dashed lines.
